“High time” for a woman to be Secretary-General of the United Nations
“It’s long overdue,” remarked Jessica Neuwirth, Director of Donor Direct Action, adding that she “couldn’t agree more” with the comment made this week by the current Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, that it is “high time” for a woman to hold his job. Men have held the top job at the United Nations for the whole 70 years of its existence, despite numerous resolutions by governments pledging to include women at the highest levels of decision-making in the world body.

Currently the UN Security Council is deliberating on who will succeed Mr. Ban whose term of office expires at the end of this year. But despite half the candidates being well-qualified women, so far the results of the Council’s secret ‘straw polls’ seem to indicate that none of the women will be chosen.
