From Sierra Leone to The Gambia: End FGM for Good

Last month, the ECOWAS Court of Justice—the judicial arm of the Economic Community of West African States—issued a landmark ruling against the Government of Sierra Leone in a case brought by the Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP),  the Amazonian Initiative Movement (AIM), and survivor Khadija Balema, who was forcibly subjected to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at age 24.

This historic verdict, achieved after decades of government inaction, demands justice and accountability. Yet President Julius Maada Bio and Sierra Leone’s government remain silent. Without action, this ruling risks becoming another unfulfilled promise.

Across the region, the urgency is growing. In The Gambia, the death of a one-month-old baby girl from FGM in Wellingara has sparked national outrage. Police have charged three women in connection with the case, including one facing a life sentence if convicted under the country’s anti-FGM law. GAMCOTRAP, a leading anti-FGM organization and a witness in this case, is mobilizing more civil society groups to ensure justice and prevent future tragedies.

This is a moment we can’t afford to lose. By giving today, AIMGAMCOTRAP, and our other frontline partners drive government action, secure stronger laws, and protect the next generation of girls.
