School girls in Nepal need your help to stop sexual violence

Nepali School Girls

The Forum for Women Law and Development (FWLD), our partner in Nepal, has just taken on the case of a 14-year old school girl who was raped by a school worker on April 27, 2019. The school principal – a friend of the perpetrator – and others in the school knew about the incident but did not report it to the police.

On May 19, 2019, two other students of the same school raped the same girl. Upon her return home from the school hostel, the girl informed her family about both incidents. With help from FWLD, she has filed a case against the perpetrators, which was heard a few weeks ago. The school worker charged is now in custody and other measures were taken by the court to address the actions of the two accused students, the principal, board members of the school, and the warden at the girl’s hostel.

School should be a safe place for girls, and school principals should be protecting girls from sexual violence rather than protecting their perpetrators.

FWLD will stay on the case to its conclusion – as it has done in so many other cases. FWLD is effectively combating impunity and securing justice for victims of gender-based violence. In this way the organization is breaking the cycle of violence and making Nepal a safer place for women and girls. School should be a safe place for girls, and school principals should be protecting girls from sexual violence rather than protecting their perpetrators.

In its fight for gender equality, FWLD needs your support to keep up with the calls for help that it receives from girls and women from Kathmandu to the most remote parts of Nepal. FWLD is there when these girls and women have no one else to turn to. Please consider making a donation to support the life-changing work of FWLD.

Yours sincerely,
