International Day of the Girl

October 11, 2021 | Donor Direct Action

Dear friends,

As we celebrate this International Day of the Girl, we are painfully aware of the vulnerability of girls everywhere to child pregnancy. A 2019 study done in 12 Latin American countries revealed that more than 60,000 girls under the age of 14 became mothers. As a result of child pregnancy, young lives are abruptly and forever changed physically, emotionally, educationally, financially, and socially.

It is heartbreaking to think of children bearing children. Because their bodies have not fully developed, they are at higher risk of mortality and obstetric fistula and they lose their own childhood.Several of our Latin American partners, including ASOGEN in Guatemala and Manuela Ramos in Peru, have been working against child pregnancy in an effort to reduce its occurrence and to provide meaningful support to children who become pregnant and their families.

On this International Day of the Girl, let's redouble our commitment to making the world a safer place for girls. Please take 60 seconds to watch this video and see the power of girls. They are our future!
